Roma to face Chapecoense in friendly on September 1

Chapecoense have announced that they will be facing Roma in a friendly match on September 1 as part of a tour to Europe.

The Brazilian club lost almost their entire squad when the plane carrying their team to Medellin for the Copa Libertadores final tragically crashed last November. Jackson Follmann, Neto and Alan Ruschel, who survived the crash, will be among the delegation that travels to Europe later this summer.

Chapecoense will first play Barcelona in the Gamper Trophy on 7th August, before travelling to Rome to visit Pope Francis and play Roma at the Olimpico on 1st September. They will then travel to Japan to take part in the Suruga Cup, which sees the J-League Cup champions face the Copa Sudamericana champions, against Urawa Red Diamonds.

Earlier this year, Chapecoense’s president Plinio David de Nês revealed that Barca and Roma were the only two clubs to offer any help to them following the tragedy, and while a friendly against the Giallorossi initially had to be postponed, it has now been successfully rearranged.

“Only Barcelona helped out from the start. They paid our full expenses to play in the Gamper Trophy, with us keeping all the proceeds from the match,” he said to Fox Sports. “Roma invited us to play a friendly against them, but unfortunately our schedule did not allow it. We will see if we can rearrange it in the future though.”

There is a small connection between Roma and Chapecoense: the Brazilian club’s current number 1 is Artur, who played a handful of games for the Giallorossi between 2008 and 2010.
